Freezers and chillers themselves are hostile to most insects, which misleads operators into thinking the facility is low risk. In practice the risk sits in the warm interfaces: the dock apron and staging area where product sits ambient before it is pulled in, the door curtains and seals that no longer meet, the condenser and compressor rooms that run warm and undisturbed, and the void behind and above insulated panels where warm and cold surfaces meet and condensation forms.

Rodents are the dominant issue. Insulated panel cavities are effectively engineered nesting boxes: warm, dry, protected and impossible to inspect visually. Rodents chew through panel skin and insulation, follow refrigeration lines and cable runs through the building, and contaminate product staged on the dock. Damage to panel insulation also drives energy cost and can force sections of a room offline.

Flies and stored product insects exploit the staging and returns areas — damaged cartons, spilled product, returns awaiting disposal and waste compaction all sit ambient, often for longer than intended. Because cold chain sites are audited by retailers and third-party certifiers on the same standards as manufacturing, an infestation found in staging is treated as a whole-of-site finding.
