Why wasps are a workplace liability
A European wasp nest near a fire exit, loading dock, outdoor staff area, playground or public footpath creates an immediate sting risk to staff, customers and members of the public — and the occupier of the site carries the duty of care. Unlike many pest issues, a wasp nest cannot wait for the next scheduled service: paper wasp and European wasp colonies become aggressively defensive as they grow through spring and summer, and a single disturbance event can put multiple people in hospital.
Commercial sites attract wasps for structural reasons. Wall voids, eaves, awning channels, roller-door housings, cable trays, shipping container gaps and roof cavities all provide sheltered nest sites, while outdoor food areas, waste docks and sugary liquids around beverage handling provide forage. Questions we get asked
How fast can you attend an active nest?
For stinging-insect emergencies we offer priority same-day or next-day attendance depending on location and time of call. Phone triage lets us assess the risk immediately and advise on interim precautions.
Do we need to close the area during treatment?
We establish an exclusion zone sized to the nest location and species. In most cases only the immediate area is restricted, and treatments near entries or public areas are scheduled after hours to avoid disruption.
Can staff remove a small nest themselves?
We advise against it. Disturbing a nest — even a small one — is the most common trigger for mass stings on work sites, and it creates a WHS incident if anyone is hurt. A licensed technician with the correct product and protective equipment is the safe path.
Will the wasps come back?
Treated nests do not recolonise, but new queens can nest in the same harbourage the following season. That is why we seal entry points after treatment and recommend spring inspections on sites with recurring pressure.
Do you handle bees as well?
Yes. Bee swarms and established hives are assessed individually — where relocation is feasible we coordinate it, and where treatment is required it is carried out and documented to the same standard.
